Why this question never dies...
Sooner or later, business asks: “How can clicks be higher than sessions?” I’ve answered this more times than I can count.
What’s being mixed up?
Clicks are CLICKS. Sessions are a constructed concept.
They live on different levels - but often land in the same slide.
What GA4 actually records
- One session can have many clicks
- Some clicks don’t start sessions
- Some clicks exist without a session_start
Comparing them directly creates confusion, not insight.
How I explain and calculate it
I separate layers clearly.
- Clicks compared with clicks
- Sessions compared with sessions
- No cross-level ratios
Clarity usually kills the panic.
